Naim DAC Naim DAC Naim digital to analogue – for the converted

The Naim DAC marks a technical milestone comparable to our first CD player, the CDS. The CDS demonstrated that CD replay and lifelike music reproduction were not mutually exclusive. Now, the Naim DAC demonstrates that the jitter and noise that bedevil traditional external digital to analogue converters can be overcome and a new route to the real enjoyment of music opened.

The Naim DAC provides eight S/PDIF inputs, two USB inputs, and is capable of handling audio data sampled at up to 768kHz and with up to 32bit resolution. It not only brings all the digital inputs together into the analogue domain, but does so with a level of performance that can compete with the finest from any Naim CD player to provide unrivalled musical fulfillment.

Listening to the Naim DAC is a revelation. Music, whether its source be an iPod, a CD or a high-resolution data file, is presented afresh, with more definition, more insight, more warmth, and simply more of those hard-to-define clues of rhythm, melody and emotion that distinguish the real thing from pale imitation. The Naim DAC is an advance that brings real music in the home closer to reality than ever before.
The Upgrade Path

Upgrades are a fundamental element of the Naim philosophy. As well as providing a significant performance upgrade for the CDX2 and CD5 XS CD players, and HDX Hard Disk player, the Naim DAC can itself be upgraded by the addition of an XPS or 555 PS external power supply.

Cables play a part in the Naim DAC experience. The DC1 digital coaxial cable, available in all BNC and RCA Phono options, is the perfect conduit for connection to the DAC from any digital source.

Naim-HDX Hard Disk player
The HDX reads audio data from CDs, stores it on a hard disk, catalogues the artist, album and track titles and, at the touch of a screen, replays it with utterly uncompromised sound quality. The HDX’s ease of use defines elegant simplicity and it even offers the option of operating as a high-end CD player by directly playing a disc loaded in its drawer.

The HDX is of course not the first hard disk music player, but it is the first to carry a Naim logo, and with it, all the principles of musical audio quality that the logo demands. It incorporates every last thing we know about maximizing the sound quality of digital audio and is the first hard disk player to reach the heady performance levels of the world’s best CD players – our own.

At the heart of the HDX is a fully integrated CD ripping and data storage system, engineered by Naim – both hardware and software - from the ground up to optimize audio quality. When a CD is inserted in the HDX drawer it is mounted on a specially selected audio grade transport mechanism and each of its data sectors read multiple times at varying rotational speeds to ensure that the subsequently stored data is “bit perfect”. Unique Naim firmware effectively handles copy protected CDs that in most other hard disk music players are likely to be ripped with compromised audio quality. The same firmware also overcomes the track start and end errors that occur in most other hard disk players and ensures that artists’ intended track lead in and out times are preserved – again, in contrast to most other players. The bit-perfect data is stored on two 400GB disk drives – one primary and one back up.

HDX playback begins with a unique Naim designed, multiple power supply PCI interface that feeds the audio data to the digital to analogue conversion stage. The HDX digital audio architecture is not limited to 16 bit and 44.1kHz but can handle bit depths up to 24 bit and sampling frequencies up to 192kHz. The HDX’s playback electronics borrow heavily from the established Naim practices that produce the World’s finest sounding CD players.

Puccini CD/SACD player & U-Clock
Puccini & U-ClockdCS Puccini CD/SACD player & U-Clock
Puccini is a revelation ??a high end sysem in box ??combining the aesthetics of the Paganini with all of our up sampling , DAC and CD/SACD player technology in a single, easy to set up unit which delivers unbeatable performance.
The Puccini range now features a patent pending (GB0817141.5) Puccini U-Clock which is separate grade 1 system clock to further reduce jitter and improve performance. Puccini U-Clock also features a USB to SPDIF converter, which enable Puccini owners to present sound files from a PC to the legendary dCS Ring DAC inside the Puccini.
dCS equipment is designed to generate and accept industry standard Word Clock on 75 ohm co-axial cable. Our Clock will drive other manufactures??equipment designed to accept standard Word Clock. Non-standard clock formats must be assumed to be proprietary to that manufacture.
Asynchronous USB Mode
In USB, there are numerous modes for synchronizing the audio between the PC (the host), and an audio device. The most popular of these, ??daptive?? involves the audio device synchronising itself to the USB ??rame??provided by the PC> This tends to give poor jitter performance.
Puccini U-Clock operates in ??synchronous??mode (NOT to be confused with asynchronous rate conversion), where the audio device synchronises the audio by providing a feedback pipe to the PC. The PC then is effectively locked to the audio device, which can have a much more accurate clock and much lower jitter.
Using the Puccini U-Clock
USB is isochronous. This means that the host (PC) and client (Puccini U-Clock) both know how much bandwidth is available alt the outset, so the host can guarantee that bandwidth will be available all the time.
Your music may be stored on a large Hard Disc Drive (HDD) in a different room, linked by WiFi to a small, silent device (such as a laptop) connected by USB cable to the Puccini U-Clock. When the user selects the audio for playback, the Mac/PC streams all of the selected data from the HDD or Network Assigned Storage (NAS) device, then outputs the data on USB.
The audio flowing between the PC and Puccini U-Clock is packetised PCM at 32, 44.1, 48, 88.2 or 96kS/s. It is the job of the codecs installed on the PC to decode the data and present it to Puccini U-Clock in a standard PCM format.

dCS Paganini system
PaganinidCS Paganini Transport
Our design philosophy behind the Paganini range was to build a system as close as possible in performance to Scarlatti, but more accessible. The same high engineering standards and electronics are common throughout the dCS product ranges.

The Paganini range has a similar feature set to Scarlatti with the main differences being in the chassis, transport mechanism and the remote handset. These differences mean little is lost in the resulting musical performance and we think Paganini has a very special kind of magic.

The Paganini range is built to the highest specifications, it features a sleek solid aluminium fascia, thick aluminium casing, all metal buttons and a smooth transport mechanism. The Paganini Transport uses the TEAC Esoteric??UMK5 mechanism which is solidly constructed and features a metal tray built specially for dCS. All signal processing and electronics in the Transport is dCS.

Paganini Transport upsamples CD data to DSD and transmits the data over the 1394 interface. SACDs are played in their native DSD format, again over the 1394 interface. Native CD data is available from 4 PCM outputs (2x AES3 and 2x SPDIF), as is down-sampled SACD data.

Paganini Transport is intended to be used with the matching Paganini DAC or with any suitable industry standard DAC. The unit may be run in Master mode or by using the DAC as the system clock. Performance will be enhanced further by adding the Paganini Clock to the system.

All of the Paganini products benefit from our ??oft??approach to programmable logic, which allows new software to be loaded from a dCS update disc to add new features and adapt to changes in digital formats.

dCS Paganini Master Clock
Our design philosophy behind the Paganini range was to build a system as close as possible in performance to Scarlatti, but more accessible. The same high engineering standards and electronics are common throughout the dCS product ranges.

The Paganini range has a similar feature set to Scarlatti with the main differences being in the chassis, transport mechanism and the remote handset. These differences mean little is lost in the resulting musical performance and we think Paganini has a very special kind of magic.

Clocking is very important in an audio system because any timing errors that occur in the DAC will be converted directly into errors in the analogue output. Our DACs can act as the system master clock, but listening tests have shown that there is no substitute for a high-quality, dedicated master clock.

Paganini Master Clock is based on our professional studio master clocks and the highly successful Verona clock. All dCS Master Clocks are subjected to rigorous in-house testing, the crystal oscillators are pre-aged and selected for long term stability.

dCS equipment is designed to generate and accept industry standard Word Clock on 75 ohm co-axial cable. Other manufacturers??equipment designed to accept standard Word Clock can be used with our clocks. Non-standard clock formats must be assumed to be proprietary to that manufacturer.

All of the Paganini products benefit from our ??oft??approach to programmable logic, which allows new software to be loaded from a dCS update disc to add new features and adapt to changes in digital formats.

The dCS Ring DAC found in all of our DACs is a discrete balanced design which does not use any off-the-shelf DAC chips commonly found in other manufacturers??product. Paganini DAC uses an enhanced version of our patented Ring DAC, improved through increased processing power, faster FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays), updated power supplies and a quieter electrical environment.

Paganini DAC features standard AES3 and SPDIF inputs in addition to the IEEE1394 interfaces. The digital volume control allows direct connection to a power amplifier, there is no need for a preamplifier. Maximum output can be either two or six volts to suit different amp/speaker combinations. Four filters are provided in DSD mode to allow listeners to tailor system response.

The unit can be used in Master mode to provide a clock for source components, and can be locked to an external word clock signal generated by a dCS Master Clock ??this produces a substantial performance improvement.

Paganini DAC is intended to be used with the matching upsampling Paganini CD/SACD Transport or with any industry standard CD Transport.

The PCM inputs on all our DACs are industry standard AES/EBU, SPDIF or SDIF interfaces. There should be no difficulty using them with other manufacturers??equipment, provided it also complies with industry standards.

All of the Paganini products benefit from our ??oft??approach to programmable logic, which allows new software to be loaded from a dCS update disc to add new features and adapt to changes in digital formats.

dCS Scarlatti system
ScarlattidCS Scarlatti Upsampling CD/SACD Transport
Our design philosophy in building Scarlatti was to use our 21 years of experience to deliver the best digital playback components in the business without compromise. For people who are serious about their music, the natural realism delivered by Scarlatti is like no other system on the planet.

Scarlatti Transport uses the TEAC Esoteric VRDS Neo??mechanism which provides a brushless motor with heavy flywheel for stable disc rotation and super rigid construction. All signal processing and electronics in the transport is dCS.

Scarlatti Transport features a IEEE 1394 Firewire link which outputs dCS -encrypted DSD (1 bit data at the rate of 2.822MS/s) to a dCS DAC from CD or SACD. Scarlatti Transport upsamples CD data to DSD and transmits the data over the 1394 interface. SACDs are played in their native DSD format, again over the IEEE 1394 interface. Native CD data is available from 7 PCM outputs (2x AES/EBU and 4x SPDIF, 1x SDIF-2), as is down-sampled SACD data.

Scarlatti Transport is intended to be used with the matching Scarlatti DAC or with any suitable industry standard DAC. The unit may be run in Master mode or by using the DAC as the system clock. Performance will be enhanced further by adding the Scarlatti Clock to the system.

All of the Scarlatti products benefit from our ??oft??approach to programmable logic which allows new software to be loaded from a dCS update CD to add new features and adapt to changes in digital formats.
